Luz Maria Salinas: Painting with Straw

Luz Maria Salinas: Painting with Straw

The art of straw painting, or designing with tiny pieces of colored straw, is a Mexican folk tradition that dates back to the sixteenth century.  In this tradition, the artist uses dyed popotillo, a type of native Mexican grass, to create images and designs.  Luz Maria Salinas has collaborated with Isaiah Zagar to create gorgeous chromatic and folk-inflected pieces.  Salinas begins with a design by Zagar, and then meticulously builds in layers of color with the small pieces of popotillo.  Their work is currently on view in an exhibition at Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens.

Eye’s Gallery is proud to carry a variety of Ms. Salinas’ small works, from crosses, to decorative boxes, to magnets, as well as a few pieces of her collaborative efforts with Isaiah.  Each is a tiny work of detailed, imaginative art, made to live in your home.
